Why You’ll Love this Recipe
When you’re in need of a comfort food dish, pasta always fits the bill. It’s so satisfying.
You just can’t go wrong with the combination of Italian sausage, tomatoes, peppers and onions. Always a winner. So if you missed my Sausage Peppers and Onions and Sausage, Pepper and Onion Quiche you need to take a peek because they’re delicious as well.
The smidge of butter and cream at the end of cooking make this dish even better, so don’t omit.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- penne pasta
- olive oil
- bulk Italian sauage (hot or sweet)
- yellow onion
- green bell pepper
- canned diced tomatoes
- garlic
- Italian seasoning
- coarse kosher salt
- pepper
- butter
- heavy cream
- grated Parmesan cheese and red pepper flakes for serving
Step-By-Step Instructions
The first step is to cook your pasta according to package directions in a pot of boiling water with some added salt. When the pasta is done cooking, you’ll drain and set aside. While the pasta is cooking you’ll heat a large deep skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat, then add your olive oil followed by your Italian sausage, onions and peppers.
You’ll cook the meat and veggies, breaking up the meat with a large spoon until the meat is no longer pink and the veggies are slightly softened.
The second step is to add your partially drained diced tomatoes, garlic, Italian seasoning, and salt and pepper and mix until well combined. You can used regular diced tomatoes, petite diced tomatoes or fire roasted diced tomatoes. Any work.
The third step is to add in your cooked pasta followed by your butter and heavy cream.
You’ll want to mix until the penne and sausage/veggie mixture is well combined, the butter is melted and everything is heated through.
I like to serve this pasta with some grated Parmesan cheese and some red pepper flakes for those at the table who enjoy things on the spicier side. It’s also super tasty with some garlic bread on the side and maybe a glass of red wine.
Dinner doesn’t get much easier folks. This is one meal that I definitely hope you try because I bet it’ll be as popular at your house as it is at ours.
