Hello and Happy Thursday folks. Labor Day is just around the corner and today I’ve got the most delicious appetizer for your holiday weekend. Texas Trash Dip.
It’s also the perfect appetizer choice for your next Taco Tuesday or game day party.
Why You’ll Love this Recipe
If you’re new to Texas Trash Dip it’s basically a delicious bean dip with a funny name. The word “trash” is used to convey the bunch of ingredients included in the dip.
It’s a super economical appetizer. It makes enough for a crowd, can be prepared ahead of time and the leftovers are just as delicious as the first day.
The taco seasoning, added spices and chopped green chiles jazz up the refried beans and make this appy extremely flavorful.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- cream cheese
- sour cream
- refried beans
- chopped green chiles
- taco seasoning
- kosher salt
- smoked paprika
- chili powder
- onion powder
- cayenne pepper
- pepper jack cheese
- cheddar cheese
- scallions
- tortilla chips for serving
Step-By-Step Instructions
The first step is to mix together your softened cream cheese and sour cream until smooth, followed by your refried beans and mix until well combined.
The second step is to add your chopped green chiles, taco seasoning and additional spices and mix until smooth.
The third step is to mix in two cups of your shredded cheese. You’ll pour the mixture into your prepared dish and sprinkle with the remaining cheese.
You’ll bake for 25 minutes until the cheese is nice and melted. When you remove it from the oven you’ll top it with some sliced scallions.
I like to freshly shred my cheeses for this dip so it melts more smoothly. I use a combination of pepper jack and cheddar which we love. If you’re short on time, Southern Living uses packaged Mexican blend cheese in their recipe.
This dip is delicious served with tortilla chips, but also great with pretzels, pita chips, crackers or fresh veggies. It’s a fan favorite at our house and I bet it will be at yours too!

A Few Cook’s Notes for Texas Trash Dip
You can make this dip ahead of time and bake the day you are serving. Sometimes I make a few hours ahead of time or even the night before.
The green chiles will give this dip some heat, so when adding the cayenne add as much as you prefer. I made the dip exactly the way it appears in the recipe card and it was perfect.
