I feel like you’re either a fan of tuna salad or you’re not, am I right? Well’ I’m a fan of the Best Tuna Salad Recipe here at the BHK and I hope you’ll be too.
It’s one of the easiest recipes to make and it’s perfect served as a sandwich, or a salad platter or even as a cheesy tuna melt on rye or sourdough bread with fresh tomatoes.
Why You’ll Love this Recipe
5 main ingredients is all you need to make this simple recipe and just about 15 minutes of prep time. Only 10 minutes if you’re a quick chopper.
Tuna salad is a great source of protein.
Make it a sandwich and add some fresh greens and a fresh tomato slice or two and lunch is served.
It’s perfect for meal prep and will last properly stored in your refrigerator for 3-4 days.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- solid white albacore tuna in water
- celery
- red onion
- dill pickles
- mayonnaise
- kosher salt and pepper
My little secret to adding more delicious flavor is the chopped pickles. I love it! And sometimes instead of using plain kosher salt and pepper, I used Jane’s Krazy Mixed-Up Salt. I just sprinkle in some and then give it a taste and go from there. If I think it needs more, I add a little more.
Step-By-Step Instructions
The first step of the recipe is to drain your can of tuna and add to a medium bowl. Then you’ll add in your chopped celery, red onion and pickles to the same bowl followed by your mayo, salt and pepper.
The final step is to mix gently until well combined.
I like to chill my tuna salad in the refrigerator for a while before I enjoy it. That’s just me.
What to Serve with Tuna Salad
I love my sandwich on rye or multigrain toast with a bit of lettuce and a fresh tomato slice or two. I also enjoy it with a side of chips.
If you’re trying to cut calories, you can omit the bread and serve with crackers.
I hope you guys give this quick and easy recipe a try. It’s perfect for Fridays during the Lenten season!

A Few Cook’s Notes for the Best Tuna Salad Recipe
I love red onion in my tuna salad, but you could substitute yellow onion if you have that on hand.
I think 1/3 cup mayo is the right amount of mayo for this recipe. If you feel like you need a smidge more, feel free to add it.
This tuna salad makes a delicious tuna melt. Just add a few slices of your favorite cheese to a slice of bread, then top with a scoop of tuna salad, add a tomato slice or two if you’d like, top with a few more slices of cheese another slice of bread and grill in a frying pan until your cheese is melted and your bread is nicely grilled.

Great idea Carol!
I’ve been making this for years now. I love red onion, and small diced celery and kosher sour garlic pickels. There are so many Tuna recepies that people can make but they can’t be bothered. I live on Long Island and some places charge 16.00 a Lb.
I’d rather make in homemade any day Patrick!
