- 1 12-oz. can solid white albacore tuna in water, drained
- 1/2 cup finely chopped celery
- 1/3 cup finely chopped red onion
- 1/3 cup mayonnaise, I use Hellmann's
- 2 Tbsp. finely chopped dill pickles
- coarse kosher salt and pepper, to taste
Drain your can of tuna and add to a medium bowl. Add in your chopped celery, red onion and pickles to the same bowl followed by your mayo, salt and pepper.Mix gently until well combined. Add more mayonnaise if needed to reach desired creamy consistency.Cover your bowl with plastic wrap and let the tuna salad chill in the fridge until your ready to enjoy. I like to chill mine for about 30 minutes before I enjoy.
I love red onion in my tuna salad, but you could substitute yellow onion if you have that on hand.
I think 1/3 cup mayo is the right amount of mayo for this recipe. If you feel like you need a smidge more, feel free to add it.
This tuna salad makes a delicious tuna melt. Just add a few slices of your favorite cheese to a slice of bread, then top with a scoop of tuna salad, add a tomato slice or two if you'd like, top with a few more slices of cheese another slice of bread and grill in a frying pan until your cheese is melted and your bread is nicely grilled.
