Why You’ll Love this Recipe
Seriously, I feel like any appetizer that combines anything with cheese is always a winner. And add some jammy caramelized onions and the flavor gets to a whole new level that’s guaranteed to please.
I know caramelizing onions takes a little time, but it’s so worth it in the end. And besides the time to caramelize the onions the remainder of this delicious easy appetizer takes 5 minutes to put together and only 20 minutes of baking time. It doesn’t get any easier.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- unsalted butter
- olive oil
- yellow onions
- coarse kosher salt and pepper
- fresh thyme
- Worcestershire suace
- cream cheese
- mayonnaise
- Gruyère cheese
Step-By-Step Instructions
The first step is to melt your butter along with your olive oil over medium-low heat. Then you’ll add your onions and cook until caramelized, stirring occasionally, for about 35-40 minutes.
The second step is to add in your kosher salt and pepper, fresh thyme leaves and Worcestershire sauce and stir until well combined. Then you’ll remove the onions from the heat. You want the onions to be a deep brown color, as pictured below.
The third step is to add your softened cream cheese, mayonnaise and one cup of your freshly shredded Gruyère to a large bowl and mix until smooth.
The fourth and final step is to add about two thirds of your caramelized onions and mix until well combined before adding the mixture to a one-quart baking dish. You’ll top with the remaining caramelized onions, a spoonful here and there, and then top with the remaining half cup of Gruyère cheese. Bake the dip at 400 degrees for 20 minutes, until it’s bubbly around the edges.
I like to serve my dip with store-bought crostini crackers, but it would be delicious with fresh veggies too. I just know you’re going to love this one guys. It’s creamy and cheesy and those onions are soooo good!
This dip will be a sure winner for the Super Bowl this year and the perfect treat for your sweetheart this Valentine’s Day!
