  • 1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 cup granulated sugar, divided
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp. cardamon
  • 1/4 tsp. allspice
  • 1/4 tsp. ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract


  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
  • In a medium bowl, stir together flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt.
  • In a small bowl, combine sugar, cinnamon, ginger, cardamon, allspice and cloves. Whisk together until well combined.
    In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine butter and 3/4 cup sugar mixture. Beat until light and fluffy, about 4 minutes. Add egg and vanilla and beat until well combined, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed. Gradually add flour mixture and mix until combined.
  • Shape dough into 1-1 1/2 inch balls. Dip the balls into the remaining bowl of sugar mixture, coating thoroughly. Place on prepared sheet 2 inches apart. Bake 8-9 minutes until golden brown. Cool on sheet then transfer to wire rack.
