  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tbsp. anise seeds, slightly crushed
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • green sanding sugar, edible gold stars, confectioners' sugar, for sprinkling
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl whisk together flour, anise seeds and baking powder. Use a spoon to measure flour into measuring cup and level with a knife so as not to over measure.

  3. In the bowl of stand mixer, cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add vanilla extract and egg and continue to beat until well blended.

  4. Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture one cup at a time until incorporated.
  5. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Separate into three smaller portions. Roll dough out to 1/4 inch thickness and cut using 3-inch round cookie cutter placing 1 inch apart on prepared tray. Use the 1 1/2-inch round cutter to cut centers from the cookies. Sprinkle with sugar and edible stars.

  6. Transfer to prepared sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove from oven and let cool on tray for 5 minutes before removing to wire rack to cool completely. Dust with confectioners' sugar, if desired.
